Irish foods low in trans fats, high in saturated

Palm Acid Oil The results of a survey by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) on the fat content and fatty acid composition of pre-packaged food products reveal that generally, levels of trans-fatty acids in the surveyed products are low. However, the FSAI is urging the food industry to find creative solutions to reformulate products, which still show high levels of saturated fats. One hundred retail food products available on the Irish market were analysed for total fat content and fatty acid profile including trans fatty acids. The samples comprised products which would be expected to naturally contain trans fatty acids such as cheese and products which may include industrial trans fatty acids as a result of the manufacturing process (eg fried food and snacks) or ingredients (eg hydrogenated oil). Results indicate that overall eighty percent of products surveyed contained less than two per cent trans fatty acids as a percentage of total fat. Thirty-three products declared hydrogenated oil as an ingredient. The results of the survey regarding the impact of the use of hydrogenated oils as a possible source of trans fats are indecisive. The survey shows that dried gravies and soups containing hydrogenated oil had the highest concentrations of trans fatty acids overall. However, 64 per cent of products declaring hydrogenated as an ingredient had levels of less than two per cent trans fatty acids as a percentage of total fat. Of these 33 products, 29 were high in saturated fat. Some products such as cereal and milk bars had saturated fat concentrations of more than 84 per cent of their total fat. If the level of trans fat may be lower than expected, the high level of saturated fats identified in the products surveyed represents high health concerns, said the FSAI. Thirty-four per cent of all products surveyed contained more than 50 per cent saturated fat (as a percentage of total fat).

Plastic Modular Conveyor Company Provides Cooling Conveyor Solution That Reduces

Plastic PE Plastic modular conveyor Corporation designed and manufactured a cooling conveyor system to meet the material handling equipment needs of IPEX, the North American leader in thermoplastic piping systems. The cooling conveyor system greatly reduces cycle times in the manufacture of the injection molded municipal pressure and gravity piping systems. As a leader in thermoplastic piping for more than 50 years, IPEX manufactures pipes, valves and fittings from a diverse range of materials including PVC, CPVC, ABS, PP, PVDF, PEX, PE and their innovative plastic and metal composites. IPEX products are engineered to handle the full range of today's municipal, industrial, commercial and residential applications. The cycle time for molding IPEX's heavy wall fittings was very long due to the time needed to cool the parts. The parts were cooled inside the mold during the molding cycle. If IPEX were to speed up the cycle of the molding machine, by reducing the cooling time, the parts would deform while cooling and be unusable. IPEX approached Dynamic Conveyor with a request to develop a water cooling conveyor system. "After searching the Internet for a supplier, we found only one supplier that offered a cooling conveyor made of plastic that would not deteriorate due to long periods of running water" said Ric Atchison, Technical Manager of IPEX in London, Ontario. Material handling equipment company , Dynamic Conveyor worked with IPEX to develop a system that places the molded fittings onto a plastic modular conveyor that is immersed into a water bath tank allowing the parts to cool. After the parts are cooled, the cooling conveyor takes them out of the water tank and dries them. "By cooling the parts with the DynaCon plastic modular conveyor solution, we have been able to reduce cycle times by up to 40%" explained Atchinson. The water cooled parts pass all dimensional and functional testing. The water bath cooling conveyor system provided by Dynamic Conveyor consists of a plastic modular conveyor with drive flights. The drive flights carry the fittings through the water cooling tank and bring them out of the water to be dried by air amplifiers, an accessory item provided by Dynamic Conveyor. The DynaCon process reduces the total time needed to manufacture the parts. IPEX installed the system in the fall of 2007 and foresees regaining the cost of the conveying system within 10 months of its purchase. "Following that our expectation is to enjoy annual cost savings of around $65,000 per year" said Atchinson. We like the modularity that the DynaCon plastic modular conveyor system offers, said Atchinson. We are very satisfied with the solution provided by Dynamic Conveyor. The after the sale support has been great. Dynamic Conveyor is an easy company to work with.

However, the heavy duty multi trip bulk bags are made from double wall UV stabilised polypropylene fabric. OZBULK supplies a wide range of tops and bases to suit specific requirements.

Nakoda to sell 10% stake to PE player

POY Yarn Nakoda Textile Industries, the country's largest player in the fully drawn yarn (FDY) segment, is in talks with a London-based private equity player for equity dilution. Investment banking sources said the company will sell around 10% equity for Rs 30 crore to fund its expansion plans. The deal is likely to be sealed this year. The company plans to invest Rs 325 crore for enhancing capacity. It will raise Rs 225 crore as debt, Rs 30 crore through sale of promoters' equity and the rest from internal accruals, apart from PE funding. Babubhai Jain, chairman and managing director, Nakoda Textile Industries told DNA Money, "We are looking for PE funding, but nothing has been finalised yet." Jain said the company's proposed continuous polymerisation plant of 1 lakh tonnes per annum (tpa) would be operational by mid-2009. The facility would help it backward integrate. Additionally, Nakoda is expanding its partially oriented yarn (POY) spinning capacity from the current 30,000 tpa to 1,00,000 tpa. Jain said, "This project will be a step towards de-risking the business model. On implementation, it will eliminate dependence on outsourced polyester chips and offer better value addition, due to continuous polymerisation." For more stories, click hereThe company caters to the small and medium texturisers and has 3% market share in the POY segment and 20% share in the FDY segment. POY and FDY manufacturing are highly capital intensive and require hi-tech plants.

New Labor Contract Law Welcomed by Employees

Chemical Fiber The new Labor Contract Law has been implemented since January 1 this year. Our correspondent asked some employees for their feedback on the new Labor Contract Law. Mr. Liu is from Shandong province. For a time, he wanted to change his job because of he was not confident about whether his rights and interest can be ensured. With the implantation of the new Labor Law, he is not ready to change his job. Liu Quansheng,Dafa Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd: We are reassured. We can resort to the new Labor Contract Law and local government to solve problems of employment. ;Zheng Weihan,Meipeilin Bearing Co., Ltd: The company is very considerate and pays insurance for us, including endowment insurance and work injury insurance. This helps us to stay in present company and work hard for it. Besides wage and insurance, there are other stipulations in the new Labor Contract Law are considered to be helpful to employees.According to the new Labor Contract Law, employers must sign contracts with their employees within a month, otherwise, they should pay double wage to their employees. For employees, work for more than one year without signing contracts with their employers can be explained they have signed contracts with indefinite time limit. Several industries with high added value say that they these stipulations can be acceptable.Zhang Guohua, Human Resource Department, Dafa Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd, says: I feel the new Labor Law has not brought any fluctuation to our employees. However, the new Labor Contract Law has brought certain pressure on some labor-intensive industries. Hu Lihong, Office Director, Wuhuan Bearing Group, Zhejiang, says: We paid more than 2 million Yuan of insurance for our employees. In addition, we raised the employees’ wage by 1,200,000 to 1,300,000 Yuan and more than 500,000 Yuan of other forms of benefits. All these mean we have to pay nearly 4 million Yuan, which is, I think, a burden for an enterprise.
